Constructed in 1968, the Joyce Athletics and Convocation Center (JACC) is home to the Fighting Irish basketball and volleyball teams and hosts many significant event on campus. Located directly adjacent to the Notre Dame Stadium and the newly constructed Campus Commons project, the roof of the JACC had become much more visible to the surrounding facilities and expanded VIP and media suites in the football stadium. As part of the planned maintenance efforts to replace the existing roof membrane, the administration identified the opportunity to provide a new visual attraction by incorporating of a vegetated roof as well. With almost two acres of flat roof, excluding the two large dome structures over the athletic courts, the Joyce Center Greenroof will be one of the largest vegetated roof assemblies in the State of Indiana. Understanding how often the JACC roof would be viewed from an aerial perspective, game-day blimp coverage, the design intentionally mimics the angled walkways of the surrounding campus quads to visually blend this large roof structure with the overall campus. A seasonal mix of plant species added visual texture and color to the space for a changing experience throughout the year.
