Anderson + Bohlander led the planning process for two commercial corridors in Norfolk, Virginia as part of the City’s pilot commercial corridors grant program - Riverview Village and 35th Street (known as Soul of Norfolk). Both places are led by neighborhood advocates in Business Associations and Civic Leagues. Their input guided a series of visioning scenarios for improved streetscaping and placemaking. Simultaneously, the client, consultant, and neighborhood teams also collaborated with Pedal Retail Advisors, to form guidelines and a process for awarding facade grants to local businesses. 35th Street is known as the Soul of Norfolk - with branding creating by business owners in the community. It’s a diverse corridor that is beloved by the local African American community. The team sought key intervention locations and concepts within the public right-of-way, and at several underutilized and/or soon to be developed parcels. Anderson + Bohlander gives special thanks to local record shop (and more) Freshtopia for use of their logo in corridor amenities. This brand will be included in the early placemaking efforts to position the corridor as a place of thriving black-owned businesses, and social center.
